Changing from upbeat music, the closer is mysterious and atmospheric. It was my attempt to write a song using a chord loop (Cm9, Bb, Gm) since I have an unfortunate habit of overcomplicating song structures. It is the antithesis to the upbeat and sprawling "Why" which has many many chord progressions in it. I also don't usually like writing in minor keys for some reason, but this one was more interesting. The bcaking vocals were inspired by those English boy choirs that sound like they were recorded in roomy churches. The song's topic is the sense of aimlessness that can result from living in an authoritarian country after revolution.
Dec 10, 2012, "I Sense A Longing" is added to the tracklist for the first time, with no lyrics. I was clearly not feeling confident about its inclusion or direction based on my description at the time: "A sort of sad ballad. Piano only at the beginning, with gentle voice above. In the style of “Vanishing” by Mariah Carey. Lots of smooth background vocals. Maybe. Not sure about this one." By Feb 14, 2013, I have first draft lyrics with nonsense lyrics (there's a weird line rhyming 'McAfee' with 'apathy'. Yes, the antivirus software). Only the chorus has any chords at this point. The lyrics are unaltered until November 15, 2013 where the first draft of the 'Ghosts on the Concrete' lyrics are written. The music for the verses is complete at this point. The improvised outro is present in early mixes.
